The Chinakkathoor Pooram an elephant peagant, is celebrated in the month of Kumbham in the Malayalam Calendar. It is held annually in front of sacred Sree Chinakkathoor Bhagavathy Temple, at Palappuram in Palakkad district in Kerala.
It is a festival which includes seven localities in which all will gather in the ground of the temple.The seven localities are Ottapalam, Erakkottiri, Pallarmangalam, Meetna, Palappuram, Vadakkumangalam and Thekkumangalam .
Localite performs traditional art forms like Theyyam, Kaalavela, Aandi Vedan, Karivela in front of the Goddess.
The customs relating temple is started before two
months with Kalampaattu .
Popular ritualistic shadow show Tholppavakkoothu based on the story in “Kambaramayana” is performed at the temple premises every evening.
This show continues for 17 days before conclusion of the festival pooram.
Before ten days a flag is hoisted in front of the temple and hence starts an important custom named as Parayeduppu. Sixteen decorated models of the kuthira (horse) and kaala (bull) are brought ceremoniously to the temple by devotees in a grand procession.
And the pooram ends in the afternoon of the second day with Kuthirakali.
